The Dark Side Of The Moon

Tonight I'm going to journey to a distant place and time, where sorrow and teardrops are unknown and heartbreak's left behind, where there's no pain nor any gloom - the far side of the moon. -- Joyce P. Hale, Far Side of the Moon WHAT WE CANNOT see, often, we fear... or at least consider with suspicion. This is perhaps because it's unknown, and people tend to be frightened of the unknown. Ghosts, for example. The far side of the Moon might be another example. Because we cannot see it, the far side of the Moon is for many a place of dark mystery. Why can we never see it? What's there? Rumors in certain circles speculate that it's the perfect place for an alien base. Rumors aren't reality, of course, so is there any information to back up these claims? WHY WE CAN'T SEE IT ? When we look up at the Moon, we always see the same side. This peculiarity results because the Moon rotates just once for every orbit it makes around the Earth. The Moon is slightly lopsided, so over millions of years, gravitational forces have slowed its rotation so that the one side always faces our planet. The side facing away from us often used to be referred to as "the dark side of the Moon," which is erroneous since, on average, the side we don't see receives just as much sunlight as the side we do see. For many hundreds of years, humankind wondered what the far side of the Moon was like. Was it similar to the familiar near side? Was it different? What secrets did it hold? The mystery began to be revealed in 1959 when the Soviet Union's Luna 3 spacecraft flew to the far side of the Moon and photographed it for the first time. These first photographs were crude and grainy, but seemed to show a land as bleak and lifeless as the near side. Subsequent space probes, such as the Lunar Orbiter 4, succeeded in photographing the surface of the far side in much greater detail in 1967. Then in 1968, astronauts aboard Apollo 8, which circled the Moon in preparation for the Apollo 11 landing, saw the far side of the Moon with human eyes for the first time. Today, we have detailed photo maps of the far side, as well as topographic maps calling out its main features. So the far side of the Moon is not as mysterious as it once was. Yet the stories persist that there are still many secrets there - stories fueled in part by the fact that since Apollo 17 in 1972, we have not returned to the Moon with a manned mission. The conspiracy minded suspect that there's a reason for that: the aliens don't want us there. ALIEN BASES It has long been a theory of some UFOlogists that the far side of the Moon could harbor a base for extraterrestrials. Presuming they come from a distant planet in some other solar system, they must have a base from which they can make their regular visits to the Earth. What better place than the far side of the Moon, which is perpetually hidden from sight? To bolster this claim, authors at such websites as Alien Presence on the Moon, site the words of Milton William Cooper, allegedly a former intelligence officer with the US Navy. In a 1989 press release from Cooper (again allegedly), he swears under oath that he was privy to information that the US government has knowledge of alien craft visiting Earth. "LUNA is the alien base on the far side of the Moon," the release states. "It was seen and filmed by the Apollo Astronauts. A base, a mining operation using very large machines, and the very large alien craft described in sighting reports as MOTHER SHIPS exist there." Also known as William or Bill Cooper, he wrote about his theories in such booklets as The Secret Government: The Origin, Identity and Purpose of MJ-12 and his 1991 book Behold A Pale Horse. Cooper was killed by officers of the Apache County Sheriff's Office in 2001 during a raid on his Arizona house for tax evasion. (Cooper opened fire first.) IS THERE BETTER EVIDENCE? How many time have you used that phrase, "DARK SIDE OF THE MOON?" Maybe not many. Other than as the title of a very popular PINK FLOYD CD, I don't believe the saying is used much anymore. Dark side is a bit of a misnomer, but there are two ways of looking at it. At times, some people have been of the belief that one side of the moon was always dark, hence the phrase "dark side of the moon." As NASA astrophysicist, Dr. Steve Bloom, says, "the side that we are familiar with is dark just as frequently. A better term might be "far side of the Moon."The orbit of the Moon is such that one rotation is just about as long as one revolution in its orbit around the Earth. Because of this, one side is facing us during its orbit." So, if you think of dark as meaning unknown, then yes, for centuries the far side was "dark" to us. Of course, there is also a dark side literally. However, unlike what some may have believed in the past, it's not the same side all the time. "During a 'new moon', the moon is between the Earth and the Sun, and so the side we know is totally dark" says Dr. Bloom. "When the moon is opposite from the Sun, the side we know will be totally bright, and the far side will be dark." However you look at it, the far side of the moon hasn't been as mysterious since the first images were sent back by the USSR's Luna 3 mission in 1959.

Crop Circles Finally

Finally, I am writing about crop circles!I have a thing for crop circles. Crop circles are strange and wonderful images -- usually circular but not always -- that mysteriously appear in farm fields when no one is looking. They're created by the systematic flattening of crops by forces unknown... They've been a big deal in southern England for decades, where they appear all over the landscape every summer. Crazy, right? This circle appeared overnight in May, 2007, in England.I got into them when I first learned the story of Doug Bower and Dave Chorley, a couple of old British blokes who became world famous in 1991when they took credit for creating every circle that had ever appeared in England. That was clearly impossible, but the British press was so happy to have a reasonable explanation they went with the story and made celebrities of Doug and Dave. I thought the story was so charming that I wrote a screenplay about it, and back in 2006 it looked as though the movie might get made at Disney with Bill Paxton directing. That didn't happen (although someone named M. Knight Shyamalan made a dopey alien invasion movie around that time that had crop circles in the story), but people still get excited about the script every now and then and I have maintained an interest in "cereology," which has nothing to do with Cap'N Crunch and everything to do with the study of crop circles... Mostly I just like them because they're so beautiful and so strange, and nobody has ever come up with a better explanation for them than Doug & Dave.The reason I bring this up now is that I got a flurry of emails over the weekend from Vxxxx, my State MUFON Director, about a crop circle that appeared in 2003 in Polk County in northern Wisconsin. As near as I can understand, one of the state's Certified UFO Investigators came across an article about a US Air Force Special Crop Circle Investigation Unit, and in the article the USAFSCCIU is investigating this crop circle in northern Wisconsin, and now my state UFO investigation colleagues are seriously wondering whether crop circles fall under our venue...This brings up some serious questions, such as, should we investigate something that doesn't necessarily involve UFOs? I say yes, because Bigfoot. Also, should we stick our noses into something that the US Air Force is already involved in? I say yes to that too, because I simply don't believe that the US Air Force Special Crop Circle Investigation Unit exists. Because I don't believe that the US Air Force would ever form an investigation unit with such a stupid, obvious name. If you were the US Air Force and you were going to form a special crop circle investigation unit, would you call it the Special Crop Circle Investigation Unit? No, you would give it a clever -- but not too clever -- decoy name, like the "US Air Force Directorate of Unremarkable Tedium". Or "Unit 9". Or CROPCOM.If we do end up investigating crop circles I'll be a very happy guy. And if there is a connection between crop circles and UFOs, you'll read it here first.

Ufo Talk Old Melbourne Pilot Abduction Story

I read about this tonight via a UFO group on Facebook. Very interesting. I had heard about it happing very long ago, a pilot 'caught' by a UFO over the ocean, they never found him. But the story supposedly goes on. I thought I would share it. Pretty interesting.

UFO Abducts PILOT in Plane!

Something in the sky made a pilot and his plane disappear.

It was 1978 when aspiring Australian Air Force pilot Frederick Valentich was taking a night training flight out to King Island. Just as he started crossing open ocean, he radioed air traffic control to report a large, brightly lit, unidentified aircraft apparently toying with him by quickly flying past him in circles overhead.

Here are his last words before apparently being abducted, as recorded by Melbourne air traffic control:

..."It's not an aircraft, it is...

...as it's flying past, it's a long shape...

Cannot identify more than that, but it has such speed!

It's before me right now Melbourne!

It seems like it's stationary.

What I'm doing right now is orbiting and the thing is just orbinting on top of me!

Also it's got a green light... and sort of metallic-like, it's all shiny on the outside....

... It's just vanished!

Melbourne, would YOU know what kind of aircraft I've got? Is it a type of military aircraft?

... It's now approaching from the southwest!

The engine is rough idling! I've got it set at twenty three, twenty four and the thing is coughing! - My intentions are to go to King Island!

Uhhh, Melbourne... that strange aircraft is hovering on top of me again...

It IS hovering! And it's NOT an aircraft!"

These final words were followed by seventeen seconds of metallic scraping sounds and static.

Search and rescue crews were immediately dispatched to the area by air and sea, but were called off four days later without any sign of the pilot, plane or wreckage, within a thousand square miles.

Frederick Valentich had disappeared without a trace.

That same evening there were many people on shore who reported seeing strange lights over the ocean, and one sunset photographer even caught the UFO rising up out of the water shrouded in a misty spray.

Strangely, five years later, the Soviet army allegedly recovered an odd metallic capsule that was found in the highlands of the Russain-Chinese border. Within the container was a message in Valentich's own handwriting that claimed he'd been captured by aliens from Pleiades, and in exchange for not aging, he was trained to pilot their space cargo ship which was exporting thousands of tons of oxygen from Earth's atmosphere!

Then even more amazingly, twelve years later, half way around the world in Spain's Canary Islands, Frederick Valentich suddenly reappeared in person, without any signs of aging! He spoke to several people, showing his passport as proof, and explaing that he now belonged to a group of humans who had been "recruited" by extraterrestrials.

What happened to Frederick Valenich? Did aliens actually take him away...only for him to possibly reappear years later? Why was no wreckage of his plane ever found?

Skeptical Group Csi Comments On The Recent Ufo Nukes Connection Press Conference At The National Press Club

Skeptical Inquirer managing editor Benjamin Radford has just posted an article here, in which he tries his best to discredit the USAF witnesses' testimony. Skeptical Inquirer is published by the group Committee for Skeptical Inquiry (CSI) which used to be the Committee for the Scientific Investigations of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP). As I discovered years ago, the organization has some rather interesting and largely-unpublicized connections with the US government's nuclear weapons program--although one will have to look really hard to find any information relating to that.In response to Radford's post, I wrote:Benjamin Radford neglected to mention that he is the managing editor for Skeptical Inquirer magazine, published by the "UFO-skeptical" group CSI. Radford also failed to mention that the executive editor of the magazine, Kendrick Frazier, worked as a PR Specialist at Sandia National Laboratories--one of the US government's largest nuclear weapons labs--for more than 20 years although, with rare exceptions, he seemed shy about acknowledging that fact.Moreover, a leading CSI member, James Oberg, once worked with classified nukes-related secrets while in the Air Force and once privately chastised another former USAF officer, Dr. Bob Jacobs, for leaking information pertaining to the nukes-related Big Sur UFO incident. Oberg also served as a "Security Officer" while at the weapons lab and was, therefore, responsible for monitoring the security procedures used to safeguard the classified documents generated by his group.After Bob Jacobs went public with the UFO shoot-down story, Oberg wrote to him, chastising Jacobs for revealing top secret information. In his MUFON UFO Journal article, Jacobs wrote that after he broke his silence, 'I was contacted by a variety of investigators, buffs, cranks, proponents and detractors alike. James Oberg, a frequent mouthpiece for certain NASA projects and self-styled UFO Debunker wrote to disparage my story and to ask provocatively, 'Since you obviously feel free to discuss top secret UFO data, what would you be willing to say about other top secret aspects of the Atlas warhead which you alluded to briefly...?' I told Mr. Oberg where to put his misplaced cynicism.'Despite Oberg's charge, Jacobs has correctly pointed out that because Major Mansmann had told him that the UFO encounter 'never happened', he had no personal knowledge of the classification level attached to the incident.In any event, it is almost certain that Oberg would not have criticized Jacobs for exposing 'top secret UFO data', had he known that Jacobs would subsequently publish his remark. So, here we have one of CSICOP's leading UFO debunkers-whose public stance is that UFOs don't even exist-angrily asking Jacobs in a private letter whether he would also openly discuss 'other' top secret aspects of the missile test. Once a Security Officer always a Security Officer, I guess.For his part, CSICOP's chief UFO-debunker, the late Philip J. Klass, aggressively hounded Dr. Jacobs after he published the warhead shoot-down story, going so far as to write a derisive letter to Jacobs' department chairman-Dr. R. Steven Craig, Department of Journalism and Broadcasting, University of Maine-in which Klass accusingly questioned professor Jacobs' fitness as a representative of the academic community.Jacobs' understandably indignant response to Klass, titled, 'Low Klass: A Rejoinder', may be found online. It is a must-read for anyone wishing to understand the behind-the-scenes battle that ensued after Jacobs went public with the UFO incident.Among other subjects, the rejoinder touches on acrimonious correspondence between Jacobs and Klass. At one point, after Dr. Jacobs ignored Klass' repeated demands that he respond to the debunker's charges, Klass offered character references, citing Admiral Bobby R. Inman (USN Ret.)-the former Director of the National Security Agency, who also held Deputy Director positions at both the Central Intelligence Agency and the Defense Intelligence Agency-and Lt. General Daniel O. Graham (USA Ret.), the former Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency and former Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Klass not only provided Jacobs with their names, but home addresses as well, and told him, 'Both men have worked with me and gotten to know me in my efforts for Aviation Week.'The character references provided by Klass are certainly interesting, given his stock response over the years to those who questioned his motives. Whenever he was confronted with the charge that he was not really a UFO skeptic, but a disinformation agent for the U.S. government, Klass would always recoil indignantly and ridicule the notion. So who does he choose to present as character references in his letter to Jacobs? Two of the top intelligence officers in the U.S. government." Interesting how Radford quickly publishes his attempted debunking of UFO activity at nuclear weapons sites shortly after my press conference at the National Press Club on Monday. His comments are inaccurate and misleading.
