Pink UFOs are in the news again. Sigh.

It was only back in October when we reported about the many media outlets buzzing about pink UFOs on Google Maps' Street View. Several experts, including Marc Dantonio, chief photo and video analyst for MUFON (the Mutual UFO Network), concluded that these pink UFOs were the result of simple lens flare.

But now, only a few months later, a news station is reporting on a pink UFO again.

On January 22, St. Louis, Missouri Fox affiliate KTVI reported that a pink UFO appears in Google's Street View when looking at a particular location in the nearby city of St. Peters. The station asked John Lakey, director of the James S. McDonnell Planetarium at the St. Louis Science Center, for his opinion on the pink UFO in question. Lakey responded, "That's almost certainly a lens flare effect. Yeah, it just looks like an artifact from a lens."

Although experts repeatedly explain the cause of these photographic anomalies, there are those who refuse to accept the provided explanation. And, because of this, it won't be surprising when pink UFOs pop up in the headlines again.

For the second year in a row, I traveled to The Ft. McDowell Casino near Scottsdale, AZ to lurk about the International UFO Congress and EBE Awards Film Festival. Last year John Rao's "Open Minds" (OM) group acquired and moved the long-running IUFOC conference from its perennial Laughlin, NV location to it's new venue, and I was impressed by the speaker lineup at last year's soir'e. The "A-list" luminaries turned out in droves: Stanton T. Friedman, Richard Dolan, Leslie Kean, Nick Pope, Jim Marrs, John Alexander, A.J. Gevaerd and Nancy Talbot. The speaker's list read like a who's who of serious research talent, and there was genuine excitement swirling around the event.

I remember thinking at the time: maybe there's hope for the soon-to-be outmoded "UFO conference" model. But, maybe not. The Internet has irrevocably impacted how the world seeks and finds information, and this especially holds true for the field of ufology, where the average age of conference attendees is somewhere in the mid 60s. It was gratifying to see standing room only crowds at last year's event, and the transition seemed charmed.

So what the heck happened this year? Attendance seemed substantially down; there was little, if any, excitement permeating the event and the list of speakers seemed to have devolved into the realm of kool-aid makers serving "true believers," and little known "one-trick pony" presenters. This included one poor guy (who never spoke at a conference before) who had an extremely difficult time stringing sentences together - even after long 20-30 second pauses! If I had been watching I'm sure I would have wondered why nobody came onstage to give the speaker a hand, or yank him off with a sheep herder's cane. Yikes!

Yes, my friends, it appears that the lure of the almighty dollar has struck ufology yet again. OM obviously cut corners this year on the quality of presenters - opting instead to pander to a true-believer, "butts-in-the-chairs" approach that clearly failed to deliver the caliber of data that you in The Paracast community demand. In my estimation most (but not all) of this year's line-up, i.e., Steven Greer, Stan (and Lisa?!) Romanek, Whitley Strieber, Lynne Kitei, Jaime Maussan and David Sereda, have little to offer the hungry UFO field that, in my estimation, lusts for out-of-the-box, creative thinkers not tied to foregone conclusions, self-aggrandizing grandstanding, or creating cults of personality.

When Dr. Bruce Maccabbee canceled (?) at the last minute, instead of tapping the resources of the quality talent present at the conference, Open Minds inexplicably opted to bring back, for a second year, the irrepressible Stan Romanek and (get this) they also added Stan's wife to the podium. That's right: Lisa Romanek, whose recently published book "From My Side of the Bed: Pulling Back the Covers on Extraterrestrial Contact, A Spouses Point of View," continues touting the highly controversial (and in my mind, highly dubious) Stan Romanek case.

Several people during the conference asked me what I thought of Stan's claims and my stock answer for years has been: "If a case appears to good to be true, it probably isn't." I've been monitoring the meandering claims of the Romanekian worshippers for years, and it would seem that Stan is steadily becoming the model for a new 21st century version of the "contactee" guru - America's answer to that one-armed Swiss bandit, Billy Meier. Ouch, my fingers smart just from writing that last sentence!

OK, I know, putting on such an extravagant event is fraught with financial peril, and when the bucks are spent, the bottom line is always an issue. But where do you draw the line between kool-aid mixing crowd pleasers and the genuine researchers with quality data?

Not all was a bust. There were several noteworthy presenters this year, including UFO historian Antonio Huneeus, prolithic author/investigator Rosemary Ellen Guiley, media maven Bryce Zabel, Colin Andrews (who was the recipient of the IUFOC Lifetime Achievement Award), and courageous General Ricardo Berm'udez, director of Chile's Committee of Studies of Anomalous Aerial Phenomenon (CEFAA), the Chilean government's official organization for the study of unknown aerial phenomena.

Is there hope for the UFO conference model? As the century slowly progresses, the old guard checks out and the kids grow up, I seriously doubt that this mechanism for educating the public will continue to be viable. Hi Brian, I was in Thorold - St Catharines, I woke up around 1:00 a.m. or so. As a cigarette smoker I went outside to have one and I noticed this strange light. So I got up off the deck and looked up in the sky, there was one large oval shaped one and a smaller one the same shape. The strange thing was they both went in circular motion at the exact same time. Now I'm not sure what these were, but it was nothing I had ever seen before. It has bothered me for weeks until I heard about the Fort Erie sighting. It was a Saturday evening close to that date. I am not sure if it was the same day though. Anyhow I wanted to share this with you. I have no idea if there has ever been such a sighting of two lights like this that motioned at the precise same time. Anyhow please feel free to contact me back.

Dr. Melba Ketchum is a veterinarian and specializes in DNA testing. She said her company started analyzing tissue samples collected around the US about five years ago by people trying to prove the existence of Bigfoot.

She said she was skeptical until the results came in.

"It tells me that they're Human-Hybrid," she said of the tests. "So they are a type of people but they're different from us."

She said the results from her testing are going through what is called a peer review.

"We have at our disposal Hi-Def footage that will not be released until which time the publication is finished," she said. "Hi-Def video of some sasquatch it's quite remarkable. It's amazing."

Ketchum said her lab work is clean and the samples were also analyzed at other sites. She said she has been testing DNA since 1985.

This isn't the final response to the idea of disclosure, or addresses all of it. It's just one angle into what really is a complex idea, with many potential ramifications.How Will We Ever Know If It's "Full" Disclosure?The hopes for full disclosure about UFOs will remain forever unfulfilled.There are earnest efforts by many, pushing for disclosure, but that day when the government reveals all will never come. As I've said many times, there are a few reasons for this opinion. One, the elusive, covert nature of the phenomena is an innate part of the phenomena.One aspect of this dance (close, far, in your face, jump back, hide, blatantly expose itself with lights and beams and beings...) is its oppositional position alongside the infrastructure. Science, media, academia, governments, institutionalized religions, will never "take UFOs seriously." They're not set up for that. They can't.The UFO phenomena experiences flaps not only in the UFOs themselves, like sightings and encounters, but in pop culture's and societies awareness. From the popularity of TV shows on UFOS to governments releasing some of their files on UFOs, and witnesses (often decades later) coming forward, these things happen in waves. So it often looks like "ah, the big moment is sure to come any minute now!"No, it isn't.One thing that always surprises me about the hopes for disclosures is the acceptance that whatever government, via whatever agency, is releasing everything it knows. I highly suspect that for every bunch of stuff released by MOD, or the FBI, or the French government, the Russian government, etc. there are tons of papers yet to be released. Or redacted. Or burned, shredded, conveniently "lost," and so on.How do we know that what is released publicly is the real thing? Just because they say so? What's the story behind the little we're allowed to see?Efforts for disclosure are well meaning, and while I don't think it's going to change anything, it can't hurt. We have learned some things, and that's good.Just be aware that we're never getting the whole story, and we never will. There isn't some global plan among the governments of the world to simultaneously release all it knows on UFOs.This jaded view of disclosure doesn't mean I'm anti-conspiracy. The documented history of governments mind control programs, debunking campaigns, weapons and psy-ops makes it quite clear that we are targets to be used at their whim. This is certainly as scary as aliens. A mass landing, caught on tape, aired on CNN? Sure. But are they aliens, or some kind of staged by humans event? The MILAB (military abductions) scenario is still considered pretty paranoid by many within the UFO field; as long as we hold the view that governments wouldn't do things like this, we'll remain naive.Whenever new information is released, we need to consider that we're only getting a little bit of the story; that there is very likely much more to be learned. For every piece of information we get, there are many pieces left behind. And for every document allowed to enter the public arena, we have to look at it with some skepticism. Just because they say it's so, doesn't mean it's so.

Colares Island Ufo Attacks

Two thousand people experienced attacks from unidentified flying objects appearing almost nightly with intense beams of radiation that left burn marks and puncture wounds on their bodies. Over 80 people were targeted by the intense beams of light, over 35 people were hospitalized in the nearby city of Bel'em and two died. They couldn't understand why they were being targeted, but they say they were being attacked violently. They were at the mercy of marauding UFOs whose behavior looked like a raiding party than any "peace and love" exercise. These strange encounters began August of 1977, in the small Brazilian island of Colares situated at the mouth of the Amazon River in the Brazilian state of Par'a (northeast corner of the country). The collective hysteria of its terrified inhabitants by the appearance of those mysterious lights prevented them from sleeping, and/or fishing. The population lived in a state of terror. The scream of fear can be heard every night and then the people struck by the beams of light suffer what we can call a "nervous breakdown" whose symptoms are nearly always the same: partial or total paralysis, loss of speech, chills, dizziness, hot flashes, hoarseness, tachycardia, tremors, migraine-type headaches, progressive numbness on the weird scars or tiny holes the victims bore on their bodies hit by the beams of light.

One of the witnesses of the Colares UFO attacks was a physician, Dr. Wellaide Cecim Carvalho, who cared of more than 40 victims. One eyewitness stated, "People and animals were attacked. There was no food, terrible lack of food. No one was fishing. People would not go out to their vegetable gardens for crops. Everybody tried to go around in large groups. Nobody wanted to be left alone. All of Colares stopped. At six o'clock it got dark and we would go to sleep. Groups of as many as fifty to sixty women and children would get together in one house. The men would stay awake all night. They lit bonfires and banged on pots and pans to make noise to scare the UFOs away. People began to shoot into the sky to scare them away."

On the evening of October 29, Benedito Campos and his 17-year old wife Silvia Mara were at home when "they spotted an oval, silvery object emitting a greenish beam like a searchlight towards the room where they were lying. Filled with curiosity, they approached a small window and, as they did so, the beam shot in through and made straight for Silvia, throwing her into a sort of benumbed trance-like state." COMAR assigns Captain Uyrang^e Hollanda to lead a team of Air Force Officers in an investigation of the strange events on the island.

In the beginning of September of 1977, Captain Hollanda's team of officers, engineers and scientists arrived on Colares. The men setup camp, setup telescopes and cameras on nearby beaches. When they arrived, there was total panic on the island. The population wasn't sleeping because of the fear. They tried to calm them down, but couldn't do it.

Captain Uyrang^e Hollanda, directed all the operations in the region. During the investigations, the Air Force obtained four films and hundreds of photographs of flying disks in the basin of Maraj'o. They also were a great help to the population, providing psychologists assistance, to eliminate the panic that sized the entire region.

On November 1, 1977, the military set up an UFO observation post on the Colares water-tower, when a strange event caught their attention. At midnight, a blue light, already seen in previous sightings, was moving from south to north and stopped above the sand bank called Coroa Vermelha. Another bright object, yellow to red, came closer and became dark when it touched the light. Half an hour later, another object did the same, disappearing after "landing" on a blue light. Captain Hollanda said that a huge bright object, which seemed to be the "mothership", was 100 meters from them. Captain Hollanda stated, "I was terrified. At that moment, I didn't know what would happen. They could have taken us. They could have done to us anything they wanted. Another time, we were at Ba'ia do Sol and it was around 7:00 in the morning, soon after the sun rose. We didn't see anything when, suddenly, a huge disc-shaped object, with more or less 30 meters in diameter and hovered 50 meters above us".

THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN HOLLANDA:

Captain Hollanda, himself, also became an eyewitness of the UFO encounters claiming that he was visited by one of the aliens who spoke to him in Portuguese. In June of 1997, during an interview with Brazilian ufologists, AJ Gervaerd and Marco Petit, he described the UFOs and showed them an object embedded in his left arm, claiming that the aliens put it there during his last encounter. For two days the 3 men gathered at the captain's house. They videotaped the entire meeting.

On July of 1997, Hollanda's story was published in Gevaerd and Petit's UFO magazine. For some unknown reason, on October 2, 1997, Captain Hollanda dies. He was found by his daughter lying by the side of his bed with a noose around his neck, apparently hanging. The official cause of death was asphyxia, but it was not clear if the death was accidental, suicide or murder. Personal acquaintances of the captain state that it could not have been suicide. Many suspect that he may have been murdered for talking too much.

RESULTS OF OPERATION PLATE:

The Brazilian Air Force soon discovered the reason for the panic on the island, as their own personnel became targets of the beams of light. They did manage to take four video films of the objects, and many photographs, but no explanation was ever offered that satisfied the people of Colares.
