He started a really awesome thread that I highly recommend that you check out.Entitled "Massive UFO Disclosure in the USA: A challenge for ATS" (Don't let the title confuse you, it's not actually about "THAT" kind of Disclosure) the thread introduces the reader to an awesome site called Footnotes, which among other things houses literally all of the US Government UFO files from their projects. (Of course it doesn't have the secret treaties signed by our world leaders with the Gray Aliens in it, that would just be silly). Project Blue Book, Grudge, and Sign all show up at this database. As do apparently some other's that people may not be as aware of like Project Twinkle and Project Stork (which I had actually not heard of).The database is technically searchable, but there is a lot of information to sift through. Especially in order to find the 'diamond in the rough'. So with this thread, IsaacKoi is asking for help from those who might be able to assist with the following:So, can the mass of UFO material on Footnote.com be efficiently downloaded for research off-line? Once that is done, can some aids be developed for finding relevant material? Is ATS (and the wider UFO community) up to this challenge? Can the relevant technical issues be addressed here? Over the years, I've been impressed by the technical abilities and computer savvy of members of ATS. This is an issue where ATS could get ahead of the wider UFO community. We'll see... Lesley (Debris Field blog, and Beyond the Dial in UFO magazine) has a good piece for her Grey Matters column for BoA: Money in the Sky (Part 2) : The Pointless Point. Lesley writes about the "they're only in it for the money" line many scofftoids (and some UFO people, sadly) use to dismiss people who write about UFOs and happen to make money.
"Make money;" it doesn't matter how much money, if that "making money" is a few dollars here and there or enough to make ones living from. The latter is rare, I suspect. I write like the hepped up caffeine junkie I am about UFOs and related phenomena, but so far, I haven't made a cent. So what? When the day comes that I do make "some money" I'll be happy of course, but I'm happy now too. The point is, as Lesley writes, is that there is nothing wrong with "making money" from writing about these topics. However, there are plenty of the "UFOlogy Police" (as Lesley calls them) who spend their time attacking those who "make money' or who they suspect "make money" from their UFO books, videos, and lectures.
Another comment Lesley makes is about humor. Lesley discusses UFO experiencer, writer and filmmaker Jeremy Vaeni -- one of the accused "money makers" -- and how some have added the sin of having a sense of humor to his crime of money making. I've been attacked for my sense of humor as well; in fact, I believe that those who've gone after me with such psychotic vengeance is the fact that UFO pundits aren't supposed to crack wise. And women especially aren't supposed to be so damn cheeky.
I don't know Jeremy personally, never having met him, but we've corresponded quite a bit, including an interview he did of me for UFO Magazine (Grilling Regan Lee) and I've always been impressed with his humor. He comes across as quirky, sure, but quirky is good, and there isn't enough of it. More importantly (for we all can't be quirky; you either are or you're not) he is his own damn self. He's not afraid to be who he is, doesn't pretend to be anything other than himself. That's all anyone can expect in this arena: honesty.
As to "making money," I doubt Vaeni is going to be moving to that villa in Tuscany any time soon.
This whole idea that "making money" from one's UFO passion - and that it somehow proves the individual is lying -- is ridiculous.
I loved Lesley's comment regarding this faux moral concern:
"What is Ufology? The Priesthood? You must give up all your worldly good and take a vow of poverty? Maybe you also need to promise to only bath once a year and crawl around your house through broken glass? Ridiculous!"
There are those -- way too many -- who have blogs and websites that write incessantly about how people who write about UFOs are wasting time. Apparently we;re wasting their time, our time, everyone's time. The irony escapes them: that they're wasting time telling everyone else how much time we're wasting. But they also can't resist reading the material they judge to be crap. Rather than ignoring such "crap" and doing something productive, they attack, often going so far as to lie about the people they're attacking. They harp on the "truth" and decide that they're the ones able to judge. They insist material such as abduction accounts be classified as fiction, instead of nonfiction. True, there's no ultimate "proof" of these encounters, which is a whole other topic, but here's something Lesley said about this that I think is very important:
"I hate to sound all anarchist, but why should we be so concerned about whether something is true? If we find the story thought provoking, does it really matter if it is true? There are certain fiction books that have influenced my entire life, not because they were true, but because the values I learned from them are true and because they caused me to think about things that are beyond my ordinary daily life. I am not really terribly concerned about what Jeremy or anyone else says being completely true or accurate, I am more concerned about whether it is interesting and whether I can learn anything from it. Since I look at almost all Ufology as being subjective, none of it is really true. If dozens of people had the same esoteric experience, the chances that most would interpret it differently is highly likely. Even if they all agree that they saw the same thing, many will take different meanings from what they saw. This is not only true of esoteric events, ask any policeman about robbery witnesses. One person will swear it was a blue shirt the guy was wearing, while another insists that is was green. Both of these people will be completely sure they are right and the other is wrong. Human minds interpret things differently, that is just how it is."
And it all gets down to this: for those that find some sort of twisted joy in attacking UFO and Fortean writers, Lesley suggests the following:
"Besides which, if they are so sure that they know the truth, then they should spread it, instead of spending their time sitting at their keyboard constantly griping about what others are doing."

UFO sightings might have created an impact among the masses since the 1950s but, it is certainly not a new phenomenon. Strange alien anomalies and flying objects have been observed since the time of Alexander the Great. Even many artists of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance period have included unidentified objects in their paintings and artwork.
It is of no surprise that Ufologists complain about the fact that no mainstream organizations do any research on finding the truth about UFOs. The mainstream organizations blindly advertise and follow the Government's so-called explanation of UFOs.
UFO disclosure activists like to complain about the mainstream media's lack of critical coverage which demonstrates censorship. But it seems that these activists are unwilling to put their money where their mouth is. In an effort to test the willingness of avid readers of UFO and alien phenomenon to donate to alternative media coverage, The Canadian only received 1.00 after millions of page views. Now, this is absolutely pathetic! It clearly seems that their words and actions of many readers who demand more open coverage do not go hand in hand. It also shows that they do not practice what they preach.
The Canadian offers a platform for highlighting UFO activities from across the planet. Like every other organization, it needs funds to meet it expenses. As it is a non-profit organization, it does not have too means of acquiring the required funds. In such a scenario, it was truly pathetic that readers could not extend a hand in support of this public awareness. If organizations like The Canadian are not supported by the general public, they should not hope to have a platform where they can express their views without being censored.
Alternative research has to be backed by people who are enthusiastic about UFOs and alien-related news coverage. We cannot obviously assume that the mainstream scientific community or the governmental organizations will back such research. However, it seems that UFO readers are too interested mainly in looking for messiahs than to back alternative research.
In this field of study, messiahs do not exist because no individuals or groups can convince the world about the fact behind UFOs. It is only through research that we can enlighten the world about the true origins of our species. We can let them know the truth about the UFOs and aliens.
Either people are delusional or not ready to accept the fact that alternative research needs their support. It is time that Ufologists and UFO enthusiasts understand that we have to work as a team if we need to survive. Even if every reader can donate a small amount of money, organizations like The Canadian will have the funds neccessary to support public awareness interests.
Readers need to understand that the quality of research will also be affected if an organization does not have the required funds. It's easy to make people look idiotic; after all, 73 percent of Americans supported the invasion of Iraq in 2003. So the stunt pulled off by 20-something wags Joe Rudy and Chris Russo can't be called a public service. What it does do is illuminate (as if we actually needed more data) the weird schizoid nature of media bias in the UFO arena.
Over a five-day stretch in January and February, in a stated "mission to help people think rationally and question the credibility of so-called UFO professionals," the New Jersey residents dispatched trains of balloons and flares into the night sky near Morristown.
They shot their own footage, then sat back as local TV stations lapped it up like housecats. Local 911 dispatchers got a handful of calls and another family videotaped it, too. In an effort to keep the hoax going, Russo lied to a News 12 TV crew in rejecting police suspicions that it was flares: "From what we saw? No way - the way they were moving around. I mean, they zipped over our car."
TV anchors who've likely never filed a Freedom of Information Act against the feds for UFO data were absolutely charmed by these featureless nocturnal blobs of light. With an assist from Fox News, the story went national, and the biggest dupe - perhaps not surprisingly - was Bill Birnes.
Given the unfiltered credulous slop that too often permeates his UFO Magazine, Birnes was always something of a bird waiting for a windshield. Ironically, UFO Hunters, his springboard into The History Channel's prime-time rotation, appeared to have elevated its game this season following a desultory debut last year. But after analyzing the Morristown flap, UFO Hunters took the bait: "Police say the unidentified flying object was nothing more than flares - a theory that UFO Hunters has already tested and proven implausible."
On April Fool's Day, Rudy and Russo howled about their well-documented coup at http://www.skeptic.com/eskeptic/09-04-01.html. What's actually more revealing is how, within hours, Newsweek was the first to cheerlead the caper for its novel approach to promoting critical thinking. "Nicely done, guys," wrote Sharon Begley for the magazine's Web page.
Never mind how, two days later, Morris County prosecutor Robert Bianchi considered the aviation-safety implications of what they'd done and pressed disorderly person charges against the champions of critical thinking. They could've gotten away with it if they'd just kept their pie holes shut. "If there is a single word to describe this," said Biachi, "it is in essence stupidity."
A better question might be: What's up at Newsweek? On 1/18/08, soon after the Stephenville, Tex., UFO incident, editors allowed Charles Euchner, a "lecturer in English at Yale," to ascribe the sightings - which witnesses also said included pursuit by jet fighters - to delusions brought on by collective sleep deprivation.
A few days later, the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve base in Fort Worth reversed its earlier denial and admitted it had F-16s in the air over Stephenville that night. No mention of the UFO by the Air Force, of course.
On the other hand, we're still waiting for Newsweek to tell us how sleep-deprivation victims managed to see those F-16s.

I have been re-reading Don Donderi's recent book "UFOs, ETs and Alien Abductions" (click here for my previous post on the book.)
DONDERI'S VIEWS:
The last segment of the book provides an insight into Donderi's views on what needs to happen next. I pick up on page 195 "Congress should reopen the public debate about UFOs and extraterrestrials. America has the largest defense budget and the most powerful armed forces on the planet. Smaller allies as well as the larger powers that have a distant but mutually respectful relationship with the United States will have little choice but to follow the lead of Congress in dealing with UFOs...When Congress finally gains access to and then disseminates the United States' non technical information about UFOs and close encounters, then we can have an informed debate about extraterrestrial surveillance. The goal should be to figure out how to maximise the benefit and minimise the disruption of this unsolicited interest in us and our planet."
ALEXANDER'S VIEWS:
The above views of Donderi contrast sharply with those expressed by John B Alexander's (click here ) 2011 book "UFOs: Myths, Conspiracies and Realities."

Alexander then goes on to describe an attempt to hold Congressional hearings, which he was involved in, in 1999, and another attempt in 2005. Neither managed to succeed.
KEAN'S VIEWS:
I recall another suggested approach as to how to proceed, which was described in Leslie Kean's 2010 book, "UFOs: Generals, Pilots and Government Officials Go on the Record." (click here.)
I looked at the book again recently, to see what Kean thought about Congressional hearings. There were three references in the book's index. Page 110 describes the 1966 hearings; pages 111-112 and 285-286 describe the 1968 hearings. However, nowhere in her book do I see Kean proposing a call for new Congressional hearings. I
Instead, "Logically the first step on moving forward a solution is the establishment of an office in a small agency within the US Government to handle appropriate UFO investigations, liaison with other countries, and demonstrate to the scientific community that this is indeed a subject worthy of study." (p.211.)
These then, are three views expressed by US authors of UAP books, within the last three years, about the question of should the US Congress investigate UAP?
