One of those events occurred on October 4, 1982, near the Ukrainian town of Byelokoroviche, when a disc-shaped UFO apparently hovered over a nuclear missile base for an extended period. At one point during the encounter, a number of nuclear missiles suddenly activated-without authorization from Moscow or any action being taken by the missile launch officers-and were preparing to launch! Had they done so, World War III would have very probably been underway. Fortunately, after 15 seconds, the anomalous activation ceased and the missiles returned to stand-by status. A subsequent investigation by the Soviet government discovered no equipment malfunctions that would have explained the event. This incident was first publicized in October 1994, on the American ABC News program "Prime Time Live" (which unethically used KGB documents and source leads provided to its producers by KLAS-TV reporter George Knapp, without crediting his contributions). One of the paper's reporters, Inessa Kornienko, interviewed hitherto unidentified witnesses who provided additional details about the incident. While preparing the article, Kornienko contacted me and asked if I were aware of the case. I told her that not only did I know about it, I had once interviewed a former U.S. Air Force nuclear missile launch officer, David H. Attacking the UFO witnesses in the midst of presenting new evidence on a case is just distracting and non constructive. You guys are the experts in this field. Recently I was taken to task for not publishing comments. It was an accident but people can get pretty frustrated when a blogger writes statements that are controversial and they can't counter them. Somehow my email had been changed at BlogSpot. When I corrected it, I ended up having to answer every comment... it took two days... people still believe I did it on purpose. The comments are turned on off many UFO blogs and on many scientific blogs and web pages. After you receive a PHD you don't need to be right about UFOs... all you need to be is, on the right side.

Only UFO debunkers get away with explanations and no detail. We need to be on their asses and let them know, we know their game. UFOs haven't been explained, not by Project Bluebook, Condon Committee or any other government sponsored study. A star by any other name might not be a star.

MUFON needs to design a new "MUFON Journal" geared more towards the rank and file:

I love the MUFON Journal. I get it every month. I think it can be improved. First, I would like an expanded comments page. They could delete the sky map page. Anyone can get that on the internet now. We have many great UFO investigators that make mistakes or get hoodwinked. The MUFON Journal should recognize this and offer the investigator space in the journal to respond before they print a counter explanation. This was allowed for Stanton Friedman on the Brad Sparks MJ12 controversy; it should be allowed with others.

Contactees have to stop acting like they know it all.

You not only have contactees in our community claiming they know the real intentions of the ETs but they can name you each star they come from; really? These outlandish statements just turn off the majority of good UFO investigators and delay serious investigation into this real phenomenon.

Contactees, use some common sense. Think about this, would you reveal to a species just full of war mongers, fanatics, racists and power hungry mad men where your planet was?

The UFO community has to stop criticizing TV series UFO shows.

Beggars can't be choosy. We are lucky to get any show on TV. The constant attacks on UFO Hunters and others, I believe, helped in their demise. Although the show wasn't perfect, they did have access to some of the best scientific instrumentation around. Get over it, people. We should have supported, and encouraged our readers to watch the show through our blogs and our involvement, instead of nit picking it to death.

New Rule:

UFO witnesses need to stop embellishing their experience.

Nothing will hurt your credibility more than embellishing your story.

Simply put, don't do it...even if you have a book deal and they tell you it will increase sales. There are tons of UFO researchers out there just waiting for a sign of weakness in your report... you will not get away with it.

New Rule:

Scientist who want to investigate ongoing UFO/paranormal encounters need to treat what they are investigation as probably intelligent.

When it became known back in 2005 that renowned journalist "Peter Jennings" was going to address the UFO phenomenon in a docu-style format there was great fervor and anticipation amongst Ufologists; quite frankly they were just plain giddy, and I was one of them!

For Ufology to escape the "cable channel doldrums," and to be elevated above the smoke all the ads indicated that Jennings and company were going to take a "proper," sober look into the phenomenon; from the inside, more confirmation of the same became known as participants shared information with their brethren; for all intents and purposes it "seemed" that Ufology was going to receive it's just deserts-however, that did not come to pass!

The Jennings show was a great disappointment for most UFO mavens (to put it mildly) and angered many. On the other hand for abecedarians who were none the wiser, they were schooled in an inappropriate and erroneous manner.

The significance of the Jennings production and "those like it" is often overlooked; for example, Jennings reputation as a "fair-minded" journalist preceded him; for the most part he was/is revered; henceforth people heeded what he said, and or reported. A good many people put a lot of faith and trust into their respective newsmen and women, whom they watch religiously night after night; and "take their word" on issues and events... I refer to it as the "Cronkite Syndrome."

Combine that with the participants of the show; they were enticed by the same respect garnered by Jennings, and their own involvement lends credence to the show's "end thesis." From the novice's point of view this must be ingenuous; however, that is often not the case, and certainly wasn't with the Jennings production. In watching the commencement of the show one felt assured of the impartiality of the pundit; however, that conciliation would soon fade as the bias and predisposition became evident.

Tonight's show, hosted by David Muir has been touted as a "continuation or a sequel" to Jennings' offering; this of course can be taken in different ways-I'm willing to give Muir in that vein I opened the bottle and "savored the aroma" of the cork; the content seemed full-bodied, and it's bouquet pleasant to the senses; in taking my first sip, it appeared to be very palatable; although the finish was long, indicating good quality, the "aftertaste left much to be desired."

The program opened with white print on a black screen and a sobering voice indicating that the UfO's depicted in the upcoming animations were approved by the very witnesses who viewed them.

From there, following various photographs and animations of UFOs, the first individual to appear was that of Dr. Frank Drake, the founder of SETI; he staunchly proclaimed that "there is intelligent life out there!" This was accompanied by several declarations by various people, (including notable scientists) that "we are not alone" and the government knows it!

Although the pictures, animations and declarations were "old hat" as far as a "UFO documentary" is concerned, I still couldn't help to be energized, knowing this was coming from such a prominent media personality as "Peter Jennings."

The show seemed to be starting in a "gallop" and appeared to be meeting my optimistic hopes. At this point Jennings emerged before a "studio nightscape" with a silhouette of mountains behind him; he then set the tone for the show; he illuminated the fact that the majority of Americans today believe that "we are not alone in the universe." On the other hand, he pointed out the exploratory work that NASA is doing in our solar system and "their desire" to find "any" proof of life outside of our own planet (without success). He summarized that what we we're about to experience is not only the common belief that "we're not alone" but the fact so many believe we are being visited by extraterrestrials!

As the Jennings commentary faded, more eyewitnesses to UFOs were shown, along with their respective declarations; there were voiceovers with shots of UFOs as well as the afore mentioned animations; this was becoming an "all to familiar UFO documentary."

At one point for a little drama (I imagine) a man appeared in shadow, affirming to the camera, "they are here; there's no doubt! Why they're here we can only speculate."

As that segment came to an end, Jennings voice could be heard stating statistics of various polls; he said, "eighty million Americans believe we are being visited by extraterrestrials, and forty million Americans have seen a UFO, or know someone who has. Many believe they have been "abducted" by aliens."

The next segment started with NASA scientist Dr. Chris McKay walking in the Mohave Desert. (Dr. McKay received his Ph.D. in AstroGeophysics from the University of Colorado in 1982; he is currently a planetary scientist with the Space Science Division of NASA Ames Research Center; his work also includes the project on Titan).

The synopsis of McKay's contribution, along with Jennings narration in my view, was that "there isn't any evidence that can pass rigorous scientific methodologies to prove the UFOs are indeed ET craft." The opposition to that mind-set in McKay's words was downgraded to "UfO searchers." The final words expressed in that segment were of Jennings saying, "The UFO Phenomenon, Only a Shadow of Mainstream Science."

I kept telling myself that we weren't to far into the show and that there was a lot more to come-the words, "fair and balanced" came to mind, along with it's "new meaning." Surely Jennings would follow McKay with a notable scientist to rebut what McKay alleged; someone of his caliber; knowing Stan (Friedman) was on the show, this seemed to be an appropriate place for him to appear. Or since McKay was in essence a voice for NASA, how about Dr. Richard Haines, former Chief of the Space Human Factors Office at NASA Ames Research Center now "science director for the National Aviation Reporting Center on Anomalous Phenomena." As the segment "faded to black" with the echoes of "Shadow of Mainstream Science" playing over in my head, the next image coming to the screen is not of a familiar scientist "on site," like McKay, or even in his or her office; no instead we fade into "Art Bell's home (or as Jennings labeled it, a 'compound') " at night, with Jennings repeating his now familiar term "believers" in regards to people who have experienced the UFO phenomenon, i.e., witnesses, or those involved in someway, Ufologists, etc.

Now don't misunderstand me, I applaud Art Bell, and what he does etc., but I began to question the "motives of the producers"; obviously there were people on "both sides of the UFO fence" that were appearing on the show, but to have Art Bell follow a "NASA scientist" who erroneously states information about UFO evidence, with Jennings repeating the words, "believe, believers, compounds" etc., as well as painting a picture of Bell's show being the main proponent of Ufology was reminiscent of "subliminal messaging."

The Bell segment segued to the Phoenix Lights sighting of 1997 with more of the same, declarations of eye witnesses, film animation etc.; this time however, Jennings had amateur astronomer, "James McGaha" on as the UFO skeptic; perhaps the producers wanted to add a "comedic touch" to the piece, or maybe they just felt guilty by placing Bell behind McKay; in any event, any time McGaha opens his mouth about UFOs he seems to lend aid to his opposition.

Following the "Phoenix Lights" was the St. Clair county case of Illinois in January 2000... again more declarations etc.; not to take away from the significance of these very important cases, it's just for me, it's all been said before; I was hoping for something more from ABC and Peter Jennings.

One disappointing instance in the St. Clair segment was the repeated use of the term "believer" by Dr. Mark Rodeghier, scientific director for CUFOS (Center for UFO Studies). It's understandable for the ignorant to "meld UFOs and ET craft together," ad nauseam, but Rodeghier knows better. To use the verb "believe," in reference to UFOs is nonsensical-it would be the same as saying, "I believe in Niagra Falls!"

Jennings concluded the segment by announcing the exclusion of any "official investigation" of the afore mentioned events, and he said, "to understand why, we must go back to the 'first' UFO sighting." The screen faded black and then emerged briefly showing the first cover of "Fate Magazine" which had an artist's rendition of what Kenneth Arnold witnessed back in June of 1947-then the show went to commercial.

During the break, and in retrospect my feelings were very mixed at this point; I was only twenty minutes into the show; I felt disgust, and yet I had to hold on to the hope that it would improve-surely explaining the origins of what is known as "modern day Ufology" would be a step up from what's been broadcast so far.

Why don't consultants just ask shoppers what they look at and like? Because people often don't know and won't say. By and large we are poor and unreliable sources for accurate information.

It has been repeatedly and conclusively demonstrated people will misrepresent their actual thoughts and preferences - if they even remember them - in attempts to fulfill the perceived hopes and expectations of those asking the questions. Suffice it to say that unlike ufology, certain industries such as sales are focused on producing measurable results. In other words, they want to know the truth, not just what people tend to say.

Industries determined to increase their productivity therefore recognize the reality that many reasons account for why people say things other than the statements are accurate. Effective researcher/consultants subsequently adjust their data mining procedures accordingly and as explained by Ms. Glazer.

The UFO community would be well served to take notice, but don't count on any quick improvements. It's not as if we've never been warned witnesses are prone to being influenced by what they perceive researchers want to hear.

The Sky Is Falling

Should we seriously think surveys would suggest anything other than people say they believe extraterrestrials are cruising our skies? What would we "expect" surveys to indicate?

It would actually be truly profound if the population was bombarded by decades of pro-ETH propaganda and did "not" succumb to the conditioning. "That" would be something newsworthy to ponder.

The Sky Is Still Falling

Speaking of being waist deep in propaganda... I've heard of Christmas in July, but all these spooks sounding off lately makes it feel like "Halloween" came early this year. One more time: I don't care "what" they say, if they don't present conclusive evidence along with their claims, I am not willing to accept them.

On a related note, there are several reasons why the professional research community does not identify witness testimony as particularly relevant or of equal value to other forms of evidence. One of those reasons is as explained above: people conclusively misrepresent what took place a lot of the time. This happens as a result of any number of very common occurrences.

Another reason is because there is often conflicting testimony, and an objective researcher cannot selectively accept certain testimony while disregarding other testimony ('objective' being the key word!). More specifically, conflicting testimonies somewhat cancel out one another, kind of like offsetting penalties in a football game, which puts the researcher back to relying on that which can be independently verified.

Tim Printy did a good job of bringing just such conflicting testimony to our attention surrounding the Roswell saga in his latest edition of SUNlite. You of course don't hear it from biased parties, but Mr. Printy conclusively demonstrated, among other points of interest, that some significant witnesses in the Roswell saga provided statements indicating they completely disagreed with those touting fantastic tales.

To try to make the point as clear as possible: Those who tend to cite witness testimony as reason to suggest aliens and their spacecraft were retrieved at Roswell have an obligation to accuracy to equally factor the conflicting testimony into the equation. I invite taking note of those who fail to do so.

The Publication Review Board

The Central Intelligence Agency has a Publication Review Board, or PRB, charged with reviewing material proposed for publication by current and former personnel, as well as certain other individuals. Material subject to approval includes books and oral presentations as documented in a handbook for reviewers that was approved for public release in 2008. Yes, that means 'tell all' books, lectures at UFO conventions, the ever popular whistle blower interviews and various other means of expression conducted by current and (allegedly) retired spooks actually consist entirely of info approved for your perusal.

Haven't any of those intel guys ever just busted out and said some things they weren't supposed to say, you ask? Yeah, they sure have, or at least it would appear so.

One of the more notable circumstances occurred when I. Lewis Libby, Jr., former chief of staff to Vice President Cheney, blew the cover of Valerie Plame Wilson, wife of an ambassador. Ms. Plame Wilson was an undercover CIA operative prior to being outed by Libby. He was convicted in 2007 of various charges stemming from the incident and President Bush subsequently commuted the prison sentence.

More recently, former CIA officer John Kiriakou was indicted in April on charges related to providing classified information to journalists. He is also accused of lying and misrepresenting his activities to the PRB, circumstances that at least appear to be taken seriously.

The CIA since jumped out here and decided it was time to review the reviewers. In May an internal probe was launched focusing upon the activities of the PRB. The Board is suspected of censoring opinions that frame the Agency in negative contexts rather than limiting its influence to objectively editing classified information from proposed statements.

It seems they have their challenges sorting it all out. One way or another, I'd confidently say that with all this reviewing going on around Langley, it's pretty unlikely any personnel are sashaying up to podiums at UFO conventions or settling into C2C interviews to spill genuine company secrets.

My Views

I suppose every now and then bloggers should offer a bit of clarification concerning their specific perspectives about ufology. I choose to do so at this time in order to assist you in understanding where I am headed with this post.

I have been actively involved with the UFO community for some 20+ years to more and less extents. I am in my late 40's and my interest in Fortean phenomena goes back to childhood.

Like many of us, it seems apparent twists of fate resulted in my extents of interest and involvement. A few choices and incidents here and there forever altered the course of my life.

My subsequent involvement with the UFO community evolved through many capacities and points of view. My current overall perspective is the result of several aspects of my life, as is the case among all of us. My particular choices and resulting path included intentional efforts to learn more about self-improvement, the professional mental health community stances on related issues and practical scientific principles.

I also made intentional efforts to reasonably educate myself in additional areas that I strongly felt most people were failing to adequately take into account while developing their often non-negotiable beliefs. Such areas included the extreme yet rarely discussed relevance of emotional trauma and the significance of the global intelligence community. I attempted to balance such subject matter with my understandings of the many reported sightings, claims of self-described abductees and the vast range of controversial research methods increasingly permeating the field over the decades.

My resulting opinion is that there may indeed be some kind of yet to be more fully understood paranormal phenomena at the core of what became known as ufology. I could not conclusively say one way or the other.

That stated, I am nearly convinced there is virtually no reason whatsoever to even suppose, much less conclude, the phenomena commonly reported has anything at all to do with extraterrestrial visitors. I would go as far as to propose that public opinion of what became known as the UFO phenomenon would have evolved entirely differently - and we would hold much more accurate perspectives about it - had we not been subjected to the debilitating amount of conditioning that has been the case.

I suggest that if we had not been so deeply conditioned to believe in visiting aliens, we would have developed entirely different ideas about that which is being reported. Moreover, I suggest witnesses would commonly develop entirely different interpretations of what they suppose they observed.

All of which might give rise to questions related to who is conducting the conditioning and why. Such questions, my fellow fateful UFO Land residents, are why I ever began researching the case of Leah Haley and eventually first contacted her in 2009.

Leah Haley

Early on in my series of posts on the Leah Haley Case I attempted to emphasize the relevance of her questionable treatment as a witness. I felt this was an important aspect of her story and I am of the opinion it should be relevant to virtually all interested parties, regardless of preferred perspectives about alleged alien abduction. I continue to feel that way.

Understandably, the general and prevailing lessons to be learned from Ms. Haley's saga are sometimes overlooked while considering various interesting details of her case. I therefore choose to bring this post to a close by combining the above food for thought with a summary of my interpretation of part of the relevance of Ms. Haley's hike along the UFO trail:

Leah Haley had memories of a childhood sighting involving multiple saucer-shaped objects in the sky, multiple witnesses and apparent short term amnesia. At the recommendation of Budd Hopkins, she contacted the Mutual UFO Network, a public nonprofit corporation dedicated to the scientific study of UFOs for the benefit of humanity, for assistance in further understanding her fragmented memories.

This resulted in developing a relationship with John Carpenter, then a social worker, mental health counselor and member of the MUFON board of directors. Mr. Carpenter conducted some 14 regressive hypnosis sessions with Ms. Haley, resulting in her developing beliefs she was regularly kidnapped by both alien and human beings.

Ms. Haley subsequently developed acquaintances with Lieutenant Colonel Donald Ware, USAF, Retired, and Colonel Robert Reid, USAF, Retired, both now former members of the MUFON board of directors. They escorted Ms. Haley on an expedition of Eglin Air Force Base near Pensacola, allegedly in search of the location an alien craft was disabled and grounded by military forces and with her aboard - a tale that arose during the hypnosis sessions.

Yet another MUFON director, Lieutenant Commander Tom Deuley, US Navy, Retired, subsequently commented to "The Tampa Tribune-Times" on Leah Haley and her perspectives. Mr. Deuley proceeded to tell the "'Trib" that he and MUFON were very embarrassed by such people and that he would advise applying some common sense to their testimonies, entirely failing to mention his fellow MUFON board members acted as consultants and guiding forces in her developing her beliefs in the first place.

Ms. Haley eventually decided e-damn-nough already, and started back at the beginning, piecing together her life and experiences while trying to accurately identify the differences between what she knew to be true and what she had been led to believe was true. All of this took place, you will please note (important phrase here), because she sought help with fragmented memories of a childhood event from a tax exempt organization purportedly conducting scientific research and, specifically, from one of the organization's directors who was a mental health counselor.

Here is another important phrase: Leah Haley's story is not particularly unique. It is not an entirely isolated incident by any means.

One more important phrase: The current ufology paradigm remains conducive to producing more Leah Haley-type scenarios.

Important question: What, specifically, are we doing about that?
