Foo Fighters

No this isn't the Dave Grohl band Foo Fighters, this is the actual Foo Fighters! Or what were dubbed Foo Fighters by pilots in the Second World War (the term UFO didn't become popular until after this). Pilots from all over the world were being chased by these things so it's not some super secret weapon that could be attributed to one particular country. During the course of the war Pilots from all sides of the conflict were reporting strange super sonic aircraft flying around the skies along side them. The first official sighting wasn't until late 1944 by American pilots flying over Germany and the sightings eventually became so frequent that it was initially thought the supersonic craft must have been some sort of German secret weapon. It later turned out that German and Japanese fighter pilots were also reporting the same thing and were assuming it was some sort of allied secret weapon. Pilots were reporting seeing strange glowing objects which appeared to be well controlled flying around their aircraft. They stated the objects would often follow them in formation or fly around their aircraft making almost impossible directional changes before flying off at great speeds. There were several proposed explanations for these including mirages and anti aircraft flak but one aircraft gunner reportedly hit one of these objects with gunfire causing it to fall out of the sky in pieces and demolish buildings on the ground.

The phenomena even made headlines in Time Magazine the New York Times and the Daily Telegraph amongst others. Apart from the American, German, British and Japanese pilots who reported sighting these craft there were Polish sailors, British ground troops and British officers. It wasn't just the pilots spotting the UFO's either but their entire flight crews and also radar operators on the ground were reporting aircraft sized blips moving at incredible speeds around their screens. These strange supersonic craft were not even isolated to one particular place, they were spotted all over Europe, India, Africa the United States and the Pacific. Despite exhausting all lines of enquiry at the time and all the investigations that have been carried out ever since nobody has ever been able to identify what the so-called foo fighters were.
