These strange encounters began August of 1977, in the small Brazilian island of Colares situated at the mouth of the Amazon River in the Brazilian state of Par'a (northeast corner of the country). The collective hysteria of its terrified inhabitants by the appearance of those mysterious lights prevented them from sleeping, and/or fishing. The population lived in a state of terror. The scream of fear can be heard every night and then the people struck by the beams of light suffer what we can call a "nervous breakdown" whose symptoms are nearly always the same: partial or total paralysis, loss of speech, chills, dizziness, hot flashes, hoarseness, tachycardia, tremors, migraine-type headaches, progressive numbness on the weird scars or tiny holes the victims bore on their bodies hit by the beams of light.
WITNESSES:
One of the witnesses of the Colares UFO attacks was a physician, Dr. Wellaide Cecim Carvalho, who cared of more than 40 victims. She saw burnings on their bodies struck by the unidentified beams of light from the sky; two of her patients died. Because of her job, she was afraid of being considered ridiculous if people find out she had no explanation for the injuries and was dubious of the people's account until she was caught in one of the mysterious aerial lights herself. She did not suffer any wounds or lasting physical effects.
The locals, the vast majority who were fishermen and farmers, couldn't understand why they were chosen by the lights. They had just one certainty: they were terrified for being guinea-pigs to unknown beings from another planet. And they didn't know whether they would survive this weird experience.
One eyewitness stated, "People and animals were attacked. There was no food, terrible lack of food. No one was fishing. People would not go out to their vegetable gardens for crops. Everybody tried to go around in large groups. Nobody wanted to be left alone. All of Colares stopped. At six o'clock it got dark and we would go to sleep. Groups of as many as fifty to sixty women and children would get together in one house. The men would stay awake all night. They lit bonfires and banged on pots and pans to make noise to scare the UFOs away. People began to shoot into the sky to scare them away."
There were reports of small UFOs, large UFOs, cigar-shaped, saucer-shaped, and more.
On the evening of October 29, Benedito Campos and his 17-year old wife Silvia Mara were at home when "they spotted an oval, silvery object emitting a greenish beam like a searchlight towards the room where they were lying. Filled with curiosity, they approached a small window and, as they did so, the beam shot in through and made straight for Silvia, throwing her into a sort of benumbed trance-like state." Silvia, who was pregnant at the time, then fainted whereupon two entities apparently entered the house carrying something resembling a golden torch and "once again the beam struck Silvia, this time hitting her in the left arm at the level of the wrist. Her veins seemed to 'rise up out of the body' so swollen were they by the beam striking them." Later, while at a neighbor's house, Benedito was also briefly paralyzed by a light beam. Fearing a miscarriage, husband and wife were taken at night by boat to the Mosqueiro Medical Clinic, followed all the way by the UFO, which made no further attempt to harm them. They remained there for three days where the wife recovered, but Benedito "was in a state of severe depression for some days, his motor functions disturbed and, as his mother reports, weeping frequently."
AIR FORCE ALERTED:
COMAR (Comando A'ereo Regional), the Regional Air Command of the Brazilian Air Force, arrived in Bel'em, and made a series of research in the region, under the project name "Operation Plate." COMAR assigns Captain Uyrang^e Hollanda to lead a team of Air Force Officers in an investigation of the strange events on the island.
In the beginning of September of 1977, Captain Hollanda's team of officers, engineers and scientists arrived on Colares. The men setup camp, setup telescopes and cameras on nearby beaches. When they arrived, there was total panic on the island. The population wasn't sleeping because of the fear. They tried to calm them down, but couldn't do it.
Captain Uyrang^e Hollanda, directed all the operations in the region. During the investigations, the Air Force obtained four films and hundreds of photographs of flying disks in the basin of Maraj'o. They also were a great help to the population, providing psychologists assistance, to eliminate the panic that sized the entire region.
On November 1, 1977, the military set up an UFO observation post on the Colares water-tower, when a strange event caught their attention. At midnight, a blue light, already seen in previous sightings, was moving from south to north and stopped above the sand bank called Coroa Vermelha. Another bright object, yellow to red, came closer and became dark when it touched the light. Half an hour later, another object did the same, disappearing after "landing" on a blue light. Captain Hollanda said that a huge bright object, which seemed to be the "mothership", was 100 meters from them. Captain Hollanda stated, "I was terrified. At that moment, I didn't know what would happen. They could have taken us. They could have done to us anything they wanted. Another time, we were at Ba'ia do Sol and it was around 7:00 in the morning, soon after the sun rose. We didn't see anything when, suddenly, a huge disc-shaped object, with more or less 30 meters in diameter and hovered 50 meters above us".
THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN HOLLANDA:
Captain Hollanda, himself, also became an eyewitness of the UFO encounters claiming that he was visited by one of the aliens who spoke to him in Portuguese. In June of 1997, during an interview with Brazilian ufologists, AJ Gervaerd and Marco Petit, he described the UFOs and showed them an object embedded in his left arm, claiming that the aliens put it there during his last encounter. For two days the 3 men gathered at the captain's house. They videotaped the entire meeting.
On July of 1997, Hollanda's story was published in Gevaerd and Petit's UFO magazine. For some unknown reason, on October 2, 1997, Captain Hollanda dies. He was found by his daughter lying by the side of his bed with a noose around his neck, apparently hanging. The official cause of death was asphyxia, but it was not clear if the death was accidental, suicide or murder. Personal acquaintances of the captain state that it could not have been suicide. Many suspect that he may have been murdered for talking too much.
RESULTS OF OPERATION PLATE:
The Brazilian Air Force soon discovered the reason for the panic on the island, as their own personnel became targets of the beams of light. They did manage to take four video films of the objects, and many photographs, but no explanation was ever offered that satisfied the people of Colares.
