LOS ANGELES - Astronomers have discovered what they say is the most Earth-like planet yet detected - a distant, rocky world that's similar in size to our own and exists in the Goldilocks zone where it's not too hot and not too cold for life.
The find, announced Thursday, excited planet hunters who have been scouring the Milky Way galaxy for years for potentially habitable places outside our solar system.
"This is the best case for a habitable planet yet found. The results are absolutely rock solid," University of California, Berkeley astronomer Gf Marcy, who had no role in the discovery, said in an email.
The planet was detected by NASA's orbiting Kepler telescope, which examines the heavens for subtle changes in brightness that indicate an orbiting planet is crossing in front of a star. From those changes, scientists can calculate a planet's size and make certain inferences about its makeup.
The newfound object, dubbed Kepler-186f, circles a red dwarf star 500 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus. A light-year is almost 6 trillion miles.
The planet is about 10 percent larger than Earth and may very well have liquid water - a key ingredient for life - on its surface, scientists said. That is because it resides at the outer edge of the habitable temperature zone around its star - the sweet spot where lakes, rivers or oceans can exist without freezing solid or boiling away.
The planet probably basks in an orange-red glow from its star and is most likely cooler than Earth, with an average temperature slightly above freezing, "similar to dawn or dusk on a spring day," Marcy said.
The discovery was detailed in Friday's issue of the journal Science.
Lead researcher Elisa Quintana at NASA's Ames Research Center said she considers the planet to be more of an "Earth cousin" than a twin because it circles a star that is smaller and dimmer than our sun. While Earth revolves around the sun in 365 days, this planet completes an orbit of its star every 130 days.
"You have a birthday every 130 days on this planet," she said.
Scientists cannot say for certain whether it has an atmosphere, but if it does, it probably contains a lot of carbon dioxide, outside experts said.
"Don't take off your breathing mask if you ever land there," said Lisa Kaltenegger, a Harvard and Max Planck Institute astronomer who had no connection to the research.
Despite the differences, "now we can point to a star and know that there really is a planet very similar to the Earth, at least in size and temperature," Harvard scientist David Charbonneau, who was not part of the team, said in an email.
Since its launch in 2009, Kepler has confirmed 961 planets, but only a few dozen are in the habitable zone. Most are giant gas balls like Jupiter and Saturn, and not ideal places for life. Scientists in recent years have also found planets slightly larger than Earth in the Goldilocks zone called "super Earths," but it is unclear if they are rocky.
The latest discovery is the closest in size to Earth than any other known world in the habitable region.
Kepler-186f is part of a system of five planets, all of which are roughly Earth's size. However, the other planets are too close to their star to support life.
Astronomers may never know for certain whether Kepler-186f can sustain life. The planet is too far away even for next-generation space telescopes like NASA's overbudget James Webb, set for launch in 2018, to study in detail.
Kepler completed its prime mission and was in overtime when one of the wheels that keep its gaze steady failed last year. NASA has not yet decided whether to keep using the telescope to hunt for planets on a scaled-back basis.

The VIKING PROGRAM comprised a pair of American space probes sent to Mars, Viking 1 and Viking 2. Each spacecraft was composed of two main parts: an orbiter designed to photograph the surface of Mars from orbit, and a landerdesigned to study the planet from the surface. The orbiters also served as communication relays for the landers once they touched down. In 1976 NASA's two Viking landers touched down on the surface of Mars. The probes conducted a host of biological experiments, including collecting samples of Martian soil to test for organic compounds - the building blocks of life - and biosignatures that could indicate the presence of microorganisms. "First" clear image ever transmitted from the surface of Mars - shows rocks near the Viking 1 Lander (July 20, 1976). The landers found little evidence for organics, but the onboard Labeled Release experiment found a reactive agent in the surface material of Mars that produced increased carbon dioxide. Gilbert Levin, an engineer who designed Labeled Release, concluded that this activity was triggered by living microorganisms lurking in the Martian soil. However, that interpretation has not been widely accepted by the scientific community. More recent research has also called into question Viking's negative results in searching for organic compounds. A study published in December 2010 in the Journal of Geophysical Research suggested that these compounds were present on Mars, but they were just destroyed by other chemicals before Viking could detect them. The stories concerning the alleged crash of a UFO into a turbine at the Conisholme Wind Farm just won't go away. It seems everyday there a new reports and new witnesses that come forward.
It seems, however, that the wind farm at Conisholme was not the only such facility to receive strange visitors on the night of January 4th.
At about 12:30am that very same evening, Peter Green, of Private Lane, Haslingden (UK), was out walking his dog when he spotted a squadron of orange glowing craft in the area of the Scoutmoor Wind Farm.
Green, a reported UFO skeptic told the Lancashire Telegraph that at first there was only one object, but it was soon joined by several others. "As the first light, which seemed to follow the Rossendale Valley came closer at what seemed a considerable speed, it rose almost vertically over the other side of the valley above Scoutmoor Wind Farm, followed at regular two-to-three second intervals by a further eight identical objects."
"Once all nine lights had risen to a height when their brightness was faded, they gathered in a 'diamond nine' formation, then one by one - in the order they had passed me and risen - they faded and disappeared, or simply gained further height and went out of sight."
It was a mere four hours later that the wind turbine in Conisholme was damaged by what eyewitnesses call "a tentacled UFO".
Phil Catterall, of the Bolton UFO Society, reports that Green was not alone in seeing the craft, "I've had around four phone calls and emails saying they saw exactly the same thing and that was before the story about the wind farm."
The British Ministry of Defense is still downplaying the events of that now legendary night. A spokesman said that "they would only investigate if they believed there was a threat to national security or there had been an incursion in UK air space"."
Local authorities however have decided to launch their own investigation due to the number of credible witnesses to the nine objects spotted over Lacashire.
It appears that the craft that buzzed this wind farm, at least had better pilots.
The events on the night of January 4th, 2009 are destined to go down as one of the greatest cases in UFO lore.

ARE THE WORLD'S GOVERNMENT GETTING READY FOR ALIEN DISCLOSURE ?
Is Obama going to pave the way and release information on alien contact having actually occurred?
It looks like alien disclosure is going to happen afterall. Apparently the announcement was supposed to have happened last year but officials close to Obama insisted he wait until 2012 - the election year. Recently top military officials in the United States have leaked information concerning what the announcement will contain.
Broadcast on every major news station in America and throughout the world. President Obama is about to release disclosure on alien contact being made which in turn will change virtually everything we know about the universe and our place in it.
What will be announced?
A comet or asteroid strike being imminent, a new way to harness solar power to replace oil, or how about life being found on Mars?
While all of these scenarios are feasible as possibly happening, the rumors on the Internet are pointing to Obama being the first world leader to actually announce that intelligent alien life has been found and confirmed.
According to most accounts, once Obama makes the initial announcement, then other world leaders will come forth as confirming it. To make the news even more shocking (not that it is already shocking enough) is that most of the rumors circulating on the internet mention nothing about SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) being the one responsible for finding this alien life. There are a number of different scenarios being played out on the Internet concerning exactly what the announcement will contain. The most common ones mentioned are listed below:
1.) Obama will announce (official disclosure) the presence of at least 3 alien species being known to us. There are reports of two of them being friendly and one being seen as a threat to the Earth. There has even been speculation that there could be one species that will be present with Obama on camera during the announcement. Other reports have the alien species as numbering up to five instead of three. Almost all reports have only the one species being seen as a threat to the Earth though.
2.) Obama does not reveal any alien species directly but shows evidence of an ancient base being found after the October 9, 2009 LCROSS bombing mission on the Moon's South Pole (second disclosure scenario). This mission was where we sent an object to deliberately crash into a deep crater on the moon where no sunlight could penetrate to see if we could detect any signs of frozen water. The announced results did indeed show a good amount of frozen water in these craters which would be a key in establishing a moon base. What is supposed to have also been found is an ancient base and that the mission actually crashed into one of the buildings on this base. This is why several researchers are claiming that no video evidence of the plume generated by the crash has been shown even though it was announced previously that it would be.
Whether either of these scenarios are indeed the ones announced or if anything is actually announced at all, we will have to wait and see. There are some signs according to several researchers that a alien disclosure is coming shortly though. One of these is the announcement from the Vatican that alien life is OK and does nothing to threaten the church or religion in any way. Many people are seeing this as a sign getting the public ready for alien disclosure. Another item which many people see as signs of disclosure are several cabinet members on Obama's staff have either now or in the past claimed they believed in aliens and flying saucers. And then there are the reports on alien implants and more and more reports on large black triangle shaped crafts that are rumored to be a reverse engineered mix of alien technology with ours.
So, are we only months away from knowing the biggest mystery in all of human history or is this just another era of hype over nothing. One thing about alien disclosure topics is that these stories appear to pop up every few years and so far everyone of them has resulted in nothing more than talk.
