FAIRBANKS - In the realm of unexplained events in Alaska, the story about Japan Airlines Flight 1628 must be near the top.
On Nov. 17, 1986, the JAL 747 was headed across Interior Alaska toward a refueling stop in Anchorage when the captain and crew saw what they took to be unidentified flying objects in the darkness to the east.
They saw lights to the left and below the plane shortly after 5 p.m. and began a series of conversations and actions that have been replayed over and over again by those who think UFOs were involved.
The incident was among those mentioned in a two-hour show first broadcast Thursday on the History Channel. "Secret Access: UFOs on the Record," deals with several incidents, one of which is the Alaska incident.
The plane, carrying a cargo of French wine for Tokyo, was northeast of Fort Yukon when the captain first reported seeing the lights. As the co-pilot set a course toward Talkeetna, the lights stayed with the plane.
After six or seven minutes, Captain Kenju Terauchi said later, the lights suddenly appeared in front of the 747. The co-pilot and flight engineer also reported seeing the strange lights. Minutes later they saw a large object following them.
With permission from air traffic control in Anchorage, the plane descended to 31,000 feet and was just south of Fairbanks when it made a 360-degree turn to see if the strange lights would follow. There were no reports of military aircraft operating in the area.
"As the airplane passed over Eielson Air Force Base, near Fairbanks, the captain said he noticed, looming behind his airplane, the dark silhouette of a gigantic 'mothership' larger than two aircraft carriers. He asked air traffic control for permission to take his airplane around in a complete circle and then descend to 31,000 feet. While the late Philip Klass, a UFO debunker, contended the JAL crew saw the bright lights of Jupiter, that did not end the debate and others said Klass was incorrect.
Leslie Kean, author of "UFOs: Generals, Pilots and Government Officials Go on the Record," provided commentary for the TV show on several cases she included in her 2010 book, one of which is the JAL close encounter.
One of the fascinating aspects of the tale comes from John Callahan, a former FAA executive who gave detailed remarks at a National Press Club presentation in 2007 on the incident.
He was the division chief of the Accidents, Evaluations and Investigations Division of the FAA in Washington, for six years during the 1980s.
Callahan said he first heard of the incident in January 1987, when the UFO story hit the news.
The voice tapes and other material were sent to an FAA technical center in Atlantic City. Callahan said at first he thought the JAL crew had seen a stealth military aircraft, but he later concluded the evidence was inconclusive.
"If this craft had been a Learjet or military aircraft at the wrong attitude, that would have been clear. The FAA has procedures that cover tracking unidentified aircraft violating another's airspace - but it has no procedures for UFOs," he told the press club in 2007.
He was asked to give a presentation to the White House scientific staff and did so, including the video and printouts.
"At the end, one of the three people from the CIA said, 'This event never happened; we were never here; we're confiscating all this data and you are all sworn to secrecy.'"
"What do you think it was?" Callahan said he asked the CIA person.
"A UFO and now they have over 30 minutes of radar to go over," he responded.
To this day the JAL story remains unresolved.
"I spoke to a doctor -- he said it was an illusion," the JAL pilot once told a reporter for a Japanese magazine.

David Stone, a professor emeritus at the University of Alaska Geophysical Institute, organized a teleconference with several of the most prominent pilots and historians interested in finding Levanevsky. There are areas on the northeast Alaska coast that should be searched, they agreed, the question is whether funding can be found to mount a search.
Salnikov encouraged them to put together a plan and he would try to secure Russian support for an expedition.

Astronomers have discovered another potentially habitable planet - and it's at least seven times the mass of Earth. Dwarf star HD 40307g hosts a system of six planets, and one of those is believed have the potential to support human life.
The newfound exoplanet was discovered by a team of astronomers from the University of Hertfordshire and the University of Goettingen.
It's located a mere 44 light-years from Earth. And although that may seem like a far distance, it's actually just around the corner - cosmically speaking. It's so close that researchers say telescopes on Earth may be able to image it directly.
The alien planet has been classified as a super-Earth, meaning it's larger than Earth but smaller than gas planets such as Neptune.
It orbits at a distance of 55.8 million miles from the sun, which puts it in its host star's habitable zone - the region where liquid water can exist on a planet's surface.
But it's not just the possibility of water that has astronomers thinking the newfound planet could be habitable.
The dwarf star is likely rotating on its own axis instead of having one face permanently turned toward the sun. The result is an Earth-like day and night cycle.
"The longer orbit of the new planet means that its climate and atmosphere may be just right to support life. Just as Goldilocks liked her porridge to be neither too hot nor too cold but just right, this planet - or indeed any moons that it has - lie in an orbit comparable to Earth, increasing the probability of it being habitable," study co-author Hugh Jones said in a statement.

Astronomers previously detected three other super-Earths around the same host star - all of which were in orbits too close to their sun to house water.
But in a new study, a research team reanalyzed observations of the HD 40307 system by using the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher, HARPS.
The tool allows astronomers to pick up tiny gravitational wobbles that an orbiting planet induces in its parent star.
And while the study brought forth a new discovery, astronomers say they're far from knowing all the answers surrounding the exoplanet.
The super-Earth may or may not be a rocky planet like earth, according to lead author Mikko Tuomi.
"If I had to guess, I would say 50-50... but the truth at the moment is that we simply do not know whether the planet is a large Earth or a small, warm Neptune without a solid surface," Tuomi told SPACE.com.
The next step for the team will be to use space-based telescopes to get a more direct look at the exoplanet and examine its composition.

Well, I'm talking not about UFOlogical iconoclast James W. Moseley (publisher-editor of the gossipzine "Saucer Smear") but about one of Moseley's unfavored acquaintances -- W. Todd Zechel, who according to "Smear's" Oct. 10, 2008, issue, died in relative obscurity on Nov. 14, 2006. (Moseley, of course, remains with us, headed toward
octohood.) Both men had been cigarette-smokers; in Zechel's case, his obesity and smoking probably caused him to sustain a stroke several years before his demise.
In his later years, Zechel (who might've enjoyed being called the "Colombo of UFOlogy") had a tacit but nevertheless self-destructive approach to interpersonal relations: if you can't successfully attack your enemies, then just go ahead and attack your friends. Somehow, "Todd the God" (as he liked to be called) viewed me as a friend -- one who, alas, could be regularly exploited whenever Zechel felt so inclined.
If Zechel could lay claim to any lasting self-descriptor, it might go like this: "The Ultimate practitioner of the strategy called 'the end justifies the means.'" Even so, he possessed a folksy, ribald sense of humor, a slightly commendable irreverence toward official authority, an abundant talent for stalking/milking his research prey, and an enviable knack for writing.
It was in the latter category that I received my final word from him -- cranked out via an e-mail message addressed to me and to several other persons on May 8, 2006. (Having no computer of his own, he relied on the communal computer service at his local public library.) His message consisted of an essay titled "The CIA's Most Secret Counterintelligence Project: The Condon Committee." One of his e-correspondents at the time -- Frank Riccardi, director of the UFO-research web site of http://www.eyepod.org -- has posted the essay's contents as part of the Eyepod's online newsletter called "The Alien Chronicles" -- Issue 2-23.
In light of recent rumors about the U. S. Central Intelligence Agency's (alleged) interference with the (alleged) plans by certain U. S. Navy insiders to jump-start some official U. S. disclosure of the extraterrestrial presence (allegedly via a series of high-level talks at secret UN-sponsored venues), I'm presenting, below, the text of Zechel's j'accuse smoking gun -- as a sort of elongated epitaph.

THE CIA'S MOST SECRET UFO COUNTERINTELLIGENCE PROJECT: The Condon Committee

When the U. S. Air Force, under Congressional pressure, appointed Dr. Edward U. Condon of the University of Colorado to head a purported "independent scientific study of UFOs" in 1966, it was the end result of the CIA secretly taking charge of UFO intelligence in late 1957, having gained control of "'scientific intelligence" within the intelligence community. Between 1958 and 1966, the Air Force had been stuck in the publicly humiliating position of having to pretend it was the U.S. government agency responsible for studying UFO sightings and related events for whatever intelligence could be obtained. But in reality it was the CIA that had wrestled control away from the USAF by proving to the National Security Council (NSC) that the Air Force had completely bungled the job and was incapable of handling it without covering itself in proverbial eggs.
Dr. Condon had worked on the ultra-secret Manhattan Project during WW II, helping develop the Atomic Bomb. Later he became the head of the National Bureau of Standards, which assisted in American scientific, technical development. But in early 1951 he suddenly left the Bureau to become the director of research and development at Corning Cookware in upstate New York. But unlike the previous director, Condon did not specialize in developing pots and pans at Corning; but instead he spent his time developing missile and rocket nose cones and heat shields/ablation shields for America's space program -- Condon had been and was a key member of the National Aeronautics Advisory Committee (NACA), the forerunner of NASA. In fact, Condon is reputed (within supersecret circles) to have based his heat shield developments on the analysis of recovered extraterrestrial material*, after he left the National Bureau of Standards at the behest of President Truman.
In reality, Condon was chosen to head the UFO study in order to get the Air Force off the hook, the USAF being in the position whereby it had to pretend it was studying UFOs, while behind the scenes and in secret the CIA was conducting the real study. In point of fact, the CIA would utilize the Condon Committee to collect UFO intell, while at the same time promising the USAF it would ultimately debunk and dismiss UFOs, which was done in what became known as "The Condon Report."
In February 1967, Condon and four other scientists associated with his study secretly met with CIA officials at the National Photographic Interpretation Center (NPIC) in downtown Washington, D.C., where U-2, SR-71, and satellite spy photos were analyzed utilizing state-of-the-art computer enhancement techniques. After being briefed and given a dog-and-pony show by NPIC's founder and director, Art Lundahl, who implored Condon's group to obtain some good UFO photos/films for NPIC to study, Condon issued a nationwide appeal through the media for citizens to send the Condon Committee UFO photos/films to assist the purported "impartial" study of UFOs, post-haste. In reality, the photographic evidence was being sought for the CIA to further its secret study of UFOs, on-going since the early 1950s but without a mandate until late 1957.
In April 1967, a Condon Committee researcher, Dr. Gerald Rothberg of Stevens Institute, Hoboken, N.J., was dispatched to Harrisburg, Penn., to investigate an on-going local UFO flap. Accompanying Rothberg, disguised as research assistants, were two covert CIA officers, one of whom was Fred Durant, a highly experienced and knowledgeable CIA Office of Scientific Intelligence officer who typically operated under a cover of being a civilian scientist, lastly with Avco-Everett Research Lab, where he was reputed to be conducting R Mararchi knew the UFOs surveilling White Sands were real but was convinced they were an amazing technological advancement by the Soviets.
The Soviets had gone so far as to stage an "accidental" exposure of a supposedly "Top Secret" schematic of a (bogus) Soviet-built flying saucer to an American spy in Moscow in 1950. Then in 1953 the Russians tried to reinforce this misinformation by planting a story in a Vienna, Austria, newspaper which claimed a flying saucer had crashed on Norway's Spitzbergen Island, and it had Russian markings on internal parts and matched almost exactly the bogus schematic exposed to an American spy in Moscow in 1950.
After Condon had buried the truth about UFOs with the study he headed and the report it generated, all designed to get the Air force off the hook and take UFO research underground where the CIA would answer to no-one, the public was only partly persuaded; but academia and politicians swallowed it like the proverbial hook, line, and sinker. Now, however, all manner of nonsense became part of the public forum on UFOs; but still, in spite of Fred Durant's gloomy predictions, America did not fall apart, the Soviet Union did.
The CIA's motto, borrowed from the Bible, says: "Know ye the truth, and the truth shall set ye free." Sadly, America has yet to be set free by learning the truth about UFOs being withheld by the CIA and other U. S. government agencies.

Right on the heels of that, we have even more amazing news: our second set of heliosphere maps is here and they show some more really surprising changes! The ENA "ribbon" that we saw in the first maps is still clearly visible, but now we have seen variations in the ribbon in the six months between the first and second set of maps. This is remarkable, as we had no idea that changes could occur on such a short timescale. Read on for more details or see our just published paper for all the nitty-gritty. Other fantastic studies by the IBEX Science team are underway, so stay tuned for even more amazing discoveries in the coming months! What has IBEX been studying? At the boundary of our Solar System, the interactions between solar wind particles and interstellar medium particles create Energetic Neutral Atoms (ENAs) - particles with no charge that move very fast. Some of the ENAs happen to be traveling in just the right direction so that they move inward through the Solar System toward Earth where IBEX can collect them. In this way, IBEX is a special kind of "telescope." This region emits no light and so information about it cannot be collected by conventional telescopes. Instead, IBEX measures these inward-traveling particles. IBEX provides the only way we currently have of studying the entire edge of our Solar System all at once. The first all-sky maps of ENAs coming from our Solar System's boundary showed something expected and something completely surprising. There are ENAs coming from various parts of the sky, in somewhat similar patterns as the scientists thought they would see prior to IBEX's launch. However, what was unexpected is an arc-shaped region in the sky that is creating a huge amount of ENAs, showing up as a bright, narrow ribbon on the maps. Right now, the science team is trying to figure out what is causing this ribbon and how distant the region is that produces these ENAs. In addition, we are not only seeing ENAs in an unexpected pattern, we are seeing many more ENAs from the ribbon as compared to the rest of the sky. The pattern of ENAs coming from other parts of the sky is essentially "dominated" by the ENA ribbon. There are so many more ribbon ENAs that the ribbon is the main feature seen in the first set of IBEX maps, even though ENAs from other parts of the sky are in that data, too. What has IBEX been doing since the first set of maps was released? While the scientists have been studying data from the first set of Solar System boundary maps, the IBEX spacecraft has been orbiting Earth "> The maps above (left) represent the first six months of ENAs that the IBEX spacecraft collected between December 25, 2008 and June 18, 2009. The use of those colors in the map tells us that the knot area emitted fewer ENAs during the time period of the second set of maps. The knot seems to have spread out a bit, as well. The red outline has been added to help you see this area a little more easily. What does this mean? Not only did IBEX see the ribbon, but we have seen it evolve over time. This is very exciting, and the scientists are very surprised! The team thought that we might detect small changes in the numbers of ENAs gradually over many years, but not over the course of only 6 months. "These observations show that the interaction of the Sun with the interstellar medium in our neighborhood of the Milky Way galaxy is far more dynamic and variable than anyone envisioned," says Dave McComas. In the past, space physicists did not have a clear idea of what to expect along the boundary where the Sun's own magnetic bubble, the heliosphere, meets the material flowing between the stars, the interstellar medium. Even though the solar wind travels outward at roughly a million miles per hour, it still takes about a year for the solar wind particles to reach our heliosphere's edge. Also, the zone where solar wind particles and interstellar medium particles interact is believed to be several billion miles thick. Finally, the ENAs that happen to travel toward Earth take another six months to many years to complete the trip, depending on their direction and energy. With ENAs coming from a supposed billion-mile thick region and traveling back toward Earth at different speeds, IBEX mission scientists had expected that any highs and lows in intensity arising from within that zone would be hopelessly smeared out in the spacecraft's all-sky maps. We are elated by the variations and changes seen so far by IBEX. These early results hint that the solar wind and the interstellar medium might be interacting in a thinner layer than many imagined. What's next? Getting more data from IBEX will help the scientists start to narrow down their set of hypotheses about what is creating the ribbon ENAs, how distant this region is, and how thick it is. The scientists have put forth several models, but none of them can fully explain the data that we have collected so far. There may even be a combination of processes occurring, which some of the scientist teams are exploring. Highlights from the paper released by the Journal of Geophysical Research: The evolving outer heliosphere: Large-scale stability and time variations observed by the Interstellar Boundary Explorer: o In this study we compare the second set of sky maps to the first in order to assess the possibility of temporal changes over the six months between views of each portion of the sky.o An interesting feature revealed in the combined maps is the clear extension of the ribbon toward a complete ring compared to what can be seen in the individual sets of sky maps.o While the large-scale structure is generally stable between the two sets of maps, there are some remarkable changes that show that the heliosphere is also evolving over this short timescale.o The overall reduction in the knot emissions are substantial, with roughly one fourth to one third less emission observed over six months.o The overall reduction in flux at both poles is clear and represents a decrease of ~10-15% over six months across the entire energy range from ~0.5-6 keV.o We conclude that departures of differences between the two sky maps of more than ~10% are most likely due to real changes in the outer heliosphere and not modulation of ENAs propagating back through the solar wind.~ ~ ~ The red 3D surface outside the heliopause is where the LISM field is most stressed by draping about the heliopause.
